Hayden’s blue eyes locked with Caroline’s.

"I’m sure we can find something interesting to do to help us survive."

Heat pulsed through her body in waves, rolling over her like an atomic blast. If only she could believe that he meant the sub-text hidden in his comment. That the "something interesting" consisted of the two of them spending the entire four days lying in the huge bed that she refused to look at.

Knowing his gaze would make her do silly, regretful things, she broke eye contact and headed to her bed.

"Looking forward to spending a night under the stars?" His voice tingled along her back.

"I’m all for a night under the stars but give me a beer and a beach, not a tuque and Gore-Tex."
She thought she would be locking him out of her room from the side door. Instead, he stepped back into her room.

"I didn’t peg you as the adventurous type. Although ..." he closed her side of the door " ... you almost had me changing my mind last night."

"I like adventure," she spat. She settled on the farthest side of the bed and opened her bag. She hoped she could get away without him acknowledging the club. No such luck.

"I saw you at the bar last night." His eyes travelled down the length of her body, leaving her to think dirty, sexy things.

She shook those thoughts out of her head when he spoke again. "You ran away from me."

"I didn’t run." She was quick to defend herself. Even though her defense was flimsy. "I was on my way out. My friends were waiting for me at the coat check."

"Of course." He eyed her with a strange look. Something between lustful and indifferent. "You don’t like me do you?"

Her breath caught. She never expected him to be so forward. "I don’t really know you." Straightening out some of the clothes in her bag, she continued, "You don’t talk to me at work for me to get to know you."

"You don’t talk to me at work!" he barked. "You don’t talk to anyone unless it’s business related."

She recoiled but only for a second. Caroline had always figured that if people wanted to talk to her they would make the effort. But after all this time, maybe she should have been the one to make the effort. Did it matter? She wasn’t looking for friends anyway. "Work is a place of business, not a social playground."

"You’re pretty uptight, Caroline." He moved closer. Close enough that she could smell his fresh scent. It reminded her of the few times he peeked into her office with a question. When he left, she could smell nothing but his cologne. "By the end of this trip I’ll get you to like me." She hoped he didn’t hear her quiet squeak when he leaned in even closer. "I promise."
 

When they were ready, drinks in hand, Jordan led Becca out the side door into the dimly lit office building. After a few steps, she stopped abruptly and turned to him. "I didn’t even know your name."

"You know it now." He ran his finger down her shoulder, the knit fabric of her gray sweater soft against his skin.

She didn’t have to speak; he could see it all in her eyes. Desire. Confusion. Embarrassment. Oh, but she had nothing to be embarrassed about.

"I admit it." She threw one hand in the air. "I wanted it badly." She shot him a pleading look and he knew just what she meant. He felt exactly the same at this very moment. "I was so horny that I couldn’t even think straight. I just...needed it."

"So you would have fucked anyone in that elevator?" Jealousy wiggled its way into his thoughts.

"No!" She was quick to respond.

Jordan had no idea the thought made him so tense until his body eased with her quick correction.

"Being with you in that elevator... I couldn’t have..." She lowered her eyes. "I’m glad you made that move."

There was no reason for her to be shy. He liked that she had been so open and vocal about her fantasies when they were in the elevator. She shook her head. "There’s nothing you can say or do." She backed away and clutched her paper cup close to her chest.

"Do we need to start over?" He held out his hand. "I’m Mr. Right. Someone told me you were looking for me."

A short laugh burst from her mouth. "That is one cheesy pickup line." He knew she loved it. For the first time in the conversation she flashed him a genuine smile and it lit up everything around them.

"I’ve got plenty more where that came from."

"Thank goodness being trapped in an elevator was your opener, because that line never would have worked on me." She shifted her weight onto her other foot. "Actually, I’m pretty sure that Mr. Sexy would have been demoted to Mr. Cheesy."

"I’m positive I can get you to cave."

"You’re that confident?" she questioned, flashing that sexy little smirk he loved so much.

"I’ll get you to cave." He leaned in and whispered in her ear. "I like a good challenge."
